View From A Blue Moon

Client: Hurley, in association with Brain Farm & Nike.

Brief: View From a Blue Moon, arguably the most anticipated surf film of the modern era, documents the journey of John John Florence from prodigious talent to the most exciting surfer in the world. I was assigned to photograph the cast during their visits to Western Australia in Autumn 2014 & 2015. The photography needed to be dramatic and striking; highlighting the juxtaposition of man against the elements of nature.

Execution: The resultant imagery was used to promote the film across a variety of mediums. An image of Florence sitting alone on a beach, watching a perfect wave with his board resting on his head was chosen for the official movie poster. Hurley and Nike used images for advertising across their website and social channels. Media partner STAB ran a cover and 40 page feature on Florence in their quarterly magazine. When the film promotion began, the images featured on many of the world's leading news, sport and culture websites, including Sports Illustrated, ESPN and GQ. Finally, a limited edition hardcover book was curated to coincide with the worldwide release of the film, selling out within weeks of going on sale.
